The Highlands do not flatter; they measure. North of the Great Glen, the landscape stops accommodating human ambition and simply continues, moor, crag, black water, weather that arrives like an opinion. The patient route: the grand road trip, two days, the M6 past the Lakes, a night in Edinburgh, then the A9 climbing through the Cairngorms as the country empties and rises. Base yourself at The Fife Arms in Braemar, where the art collection alone justifies the journey, or at Inverlochy Castle beneath Ben Nevis for something statelier. The days find their rhythm: out by nine with the stalker or the ghillie, a hill lunch from the lodge kitchen, back as the light turns copper around five. Devote one afternoon to whisky, The Macallan Estate on Speyside, or The Dalmore beside the Cromarty Firth, your chauffeur ensuring you may taste without arithmetic. In late September the stags roar across the glens at dusk, and there is no better hour in Britain. Dinner is late, the fire is lit, and London feels usefully far away.
