Milan conceals its beauty deliberately. The city shows the street a sober face, grey stone, closed gates, and reserves its splendour for those invited past the courtyard: frescoed loggias, silent gardens, collections assembled over generations and never lent. This is Italy's capital of work, where the great industrial and fashion dynasties keep their headquarters and their counsel, and where La Scala remains the most demanding audience in opera.
