Amsterdam was built by merchants who believed wealth should be implied, never declared, and the canal ring remains the world's most elegant expression of that creed. Behind the narrow seventeenth-century façades of the Herengracht lie double-depth houses, hidden gardens and collections worthy of museums; the Golden Age never really ended here, it simply lowered its voice. This is Rembrandt's city, and Spinoza's: commerce and conscience in permanent conversation. The elite are drawn to Amsterdam for its scale, a capital you can cross by water in an afternoon, and for its discretion, which is not a service offered but a civic temperament, four centuries old and entirely intact.

Few capitals are easier to reach well. Eurostar runs directly from St Pancras International to Amsterdam Centraal in around four hours, city centre to city centre, your chauffeur waiting at the platform. Drivers cross via Eurotunnel Le Shuttle and take the unhurried road through Flanders, pausing in Bruges or Antwerp if the mood takes.
